This morning the kids were not interested in focusing – at all. I was getting angrier and angrier at having to repeat myself time and again. Finally, I said screw it and went outside to the barn to do chores before I said something I would regret later. Sometimes cleaning up crap (literally) is better than trying to fight an uphill battle of the wits with a pre-pubescent child. It was good to remove myself from the situation. I had to remind myself that a half hour isn’t going to set them behind. So I cleaned the barn, and I collected the eggs.
Now, it’s their turn to be outside. Fresh air does everyone good. They need to get their energy out so they can come back in and focus.
If you are overwhelmed today, if the day is just going to hell in a hand basket, give yourself grace. Go outside and take a few minutes for yourself. It is not selfish, it is not lazy, it is sometimes necessary.
